ART: Learn to Draw Workshop

Would you like to learn to draw? Do you believe it's impossible for you? Well then, this course is exactly for you! I can teach you to draw by showing you how to activate the right hemisphere of your brain, which is ideally equipped for drawing. Drawing is innate like walking and talking, you already have everything you need, I will just open the door. The workshop is also perfect for you if you want to develop your skills. Give it a go, everyone learns and you can too!

Fees: NZ$90 - Bring your own 2B pencil, rubber and a pad of cartridge paper or a visual diary.

CHEESE MAKING: Halloumi & Ricotta

1 Saturday morning - On 14 June from 9am-12pm

You make the cheese at this intensely practical DIY 'hands-in' workshop because the key to good cheese making is knowing how the cheese should look and, most importantly, how it should feel at different points in it's creation. During this three hour hands-on workshop, you will be guided through the cheese making process while you make your own Halloumi and Ricotta which you will be able to take home and show off at the end!

CUSHION CREATIONS WORKSHOP

1 Saturday - Saturday 14 June from 9am - 3pm

Cushions are integral to adding comfort, texture and colour to any room and it is so easy to make your own. This day long workshop will cover some basics of sewing and how to sew your own cushion covers. For those new to sewing we will make a simple cover with no closures and for those more experienced we can add closures, or even sew up a squab. At the end of the day you should leave with at least one completed cushion and the confidence to make more on your own. Sewing machines and tools will be provided, however students are to supply their own materials. If you wish to bring in your own sewing machine you may but please bring the user manual along as well.

Fees: NZ$80 - Bring your own fabric, cotton, cushion insert and zip if needed

HIGH TEA - How to host

If you've always wanted to host a special morning or afternoon tea then you'll love this class where we will cover all the bases from basic on a budget to going all out for a loved one's birthday and the sky's the limit.

MEDITATION - AN INTRODUCTION

This course offers a simple introduction to Meditation, covering: What is Meditation? What are the benefits? Simple techniques for entering a meditative state Two guided meditations The tutor will bring a few meditation pyramids for those who would like the experience of sitting within one while meditation. Please bring a cushion if you would like to try this. There will also be a short discussion about mindfulness and about channelling and how it could help with meditation. No prior meditation experience if required, just an open mind and a willingness to explore. Your tutor, Kim Chamberlain offers a range of spiritual services including meditation, channelling and spiritual readings.

OVERLOCKER BASICS/SEWING WITH KNITS

An introduction to the overlocker, develop skills to use this equipment safely and efficiently. Learn how to use the overlocker for seaming knit garments. Prior Sewing experience essential. Some overlockers are available to use during the course or bring your own. Please let us know if you need to borrow one so that it can be booked in advance.

SELF DEFENCE ESSENTIALS: Krav Maga(Age 15+)

This 3-hour, self-defense essentials workshop is designed for beginners of all fitness levels, and will provide you with a fun and useful introduction to the fundamentals of the IKMF Krav Maga civilian self-defense curriculum. Whether you have previous martial arts experience or are brand new to self-defense, this workshop will provide you with practical, easy-to-learn techniques that can help you protect yourself in a dangerous or violent situation. By the end of the workshop you’ll leave with the confidence to take action and to effectively respond in a situation, rather than feeling helpless. In this workshop, you will learn: The essential principles of developing a self-defense mindset, including how to use controlled aggression as a tool to defend against violence. We’ll also discuss the key practical, psychological, and legal considerations you need to keep in mind when defending yourself. Simple but effective strikes designed for real-world self-defense situations. Reflexive blocking and deflection techniques that are intuitive and easy to practice. How to use everyday, common objects as self-defense tools in unexpected situations. How to prevent and escape some of the most common self-defense problems. Krav Maga is a highly effective self-defense system that was originally developed for military use but has since been adapted to suit the unique needs of various groups, including law enforcement, VIP protection teams, civilians, women, children, and people with physical disabilities. Known for its practicality and ease of learning, Krav Maga is designed to help individuals of all backgrounds and abilities protect themselves with confidence. SEWING KNIT GARMENTS (Simple)

2 Saturdays - 10 & 17 May 9am - 3:30pm

Want to make knit garments but feeling unsure of all the unknowns involved? This course will provide you with the opportunity to launch into sewing knits with confidence. Delivered over 2 consecutive Saturdays this course will enable you to develop understanding of the process of making a knit garment of your choice. During class, you will be guided through cutting out, prepping pieces to sew, seaming your garment with the overlocker and finishing hems, necklines and other edges. There will be many useful sewing tips and tricks sprinkled throughout the class also. Recommended to choose one of the following styles to make: Sweatshirt, Simple T-Shirt, Leggings, Sweatpants No styles that require a zip, buttons & buttonholes or other closures. If unsure about suitable style (or if you have any queries regarding course or course materials please contact the tutor via Tawa College Community Education coordinator. Some overlockers are available to use during the course or bring your own. Please let us know if you need to use a school machine so that it can be booked in advance .

SOUPS AND STEWS

1 Saturday from 9:30 -2pm - 10th May

Learn the basics of flavour bases for soups and stews and how to enhance them with dumplings etc to make them into a complete, hearty and nourishing meal that can be portioned and frozen or prepared in a slow cooker so that you can arrive home and dinner is ready. Please let us know if you are vegetarian as we can cover meat free cooking in this class.
