It will cover knowledge of tools and techniques including design, sawing, filing, texturing, soldering, sanding and finishing. Students can expect to make up to three items of jewellery including a ring, a bangle and a stone setting. Health and safety in the workshop is a key learning objective. Students must wear shoes that cover their feet – no sandals, jandals, or slides. Wear comfortable clothing suitable for a workshop. Hair must be tied back. This is for your safety in the workshop. The course begins with an introduction to sewing equipment and the sewing machine (threading up and winding a bobbin). To learn the basics of sewing you will make a pin cushion and then a tote bag prior to being encouraged to choose another project that will help develop your sewing skills. This can include envelope cushion covers, apron, pillowcases or elasticized waist skirt/trouser or pyjama pant. The course will also cover information on what to look for when purchasing a first sewing machine.
